What Increases Your Chances of Getting Colds and Flu?

he biggest culprit for letting in the colds and flu bugs is a depressed immune system. Occasionally you will get a super bug that even the toughest immune system simply cannot fight off, but these are less common than a depressed immune system. There are a number of things that can cause your immune system to become depressed.

Something that has become more and more of a problem as we live in this fast paced world is stress. Stress has been shown to negatively affect your health. When you are stressed, nothing works quite as it should and your immune system is one of the first things that suffers. A prolonged period of stress can lead to all kinds of health problems that stem from a depressed immune system.

Another culprit that can be laid at the feet of today’s fast paced lifestyle is a bad diet. Your body needs certain vitamins and minerals to function at its optimum. A diet that consists mostly of fast food and soft drinks just does not provide what your body needs. Over time, your body will deplete its stockpile of these vitamins and minerals and functions will start to shut down. Your immune system is hugely impacted by these processes and cannot function without the vitamins and minerals in a balanced diet.

As soon as your immune system begins to slow down, the bacteria and viruses that cause colds and flu make more headway. Eventually things come to a head and your immune system is just not able to fight the onslaught any longer and you get sick.

Having considered all of this, the best way to avoid colds and flu is to make sure that you take a time out when the stress gets too high and that you eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables. This will enable your immune system to keep going in times of duress and keep you healthy and happy.
