A Closer Look at Natural Depression Remedies

depression1Depression is a major problem in the world today. It is often treated with many hours of psychological therapy and with various medications. However, we are coming to realise that there are natural alternatives to these as well.

Happy Foods

There are foods which you can safely consume which boost the levels of serotonin in your brain and can help to bring your mood back to a state of equilibrium. These would be foods which are rich in fish oil (for the Omega-3), natural fats such as coconut oil, flaxseed oil, sour cherries and eggs.

No Coffee

Coffee is a great upper for your energy levels – or at least it feels that way. But it does not do your depression any favours. The problem is that, while it does give you a boost for the moment, the crash afterwards is really a problem. Caffeine can also affect serotonin synthesis which is a great way to increase your depression.

Green Tea

Although green tea also contains caffeine it also contains L-theanine. This works in synergy with caffeine to boost your mood but does so in a way that does not bring you crashing down when the caffeine boost wears off. It has also been shown to reduce stress and can boost dopamine levels in your brain.

Meditation

Meditation can help you to get back in touch with yourself. We tend to get out of touch and become reliant on other people’s impressions of us and this can lead to further depression. a person in touch with themselves is also more likely to be able to catch the negative thought patterns and turn them around and so prevent the vicious circle of depression and negative thoughts.

Endorphin release by Acupuncture

Endorphins are the body’s natural happy pills. When an acupuncturist pierces your skin with their needle in one of the body’s pressure points your body responds by releasing endorphins. The nett effect is that you feel more relaxed and calm and happy and a lot of people find that this feeling lasts long after the session has ended.

There are always natural ways to combat the hurdles that life throws in your path. It is just a matter of finding the ones that work best for you.
